Its Valentine’s Day!!!
February 8, 2010 – 1:50 pm | No Comment

Valentine’s Day…the day we are supposed to show the ones we love just how much we love them…….hmmm……..let’s talk about love.

Ok….so the day is about love…not lust, do I have that right? Love is a strong positive emotion, great affection, yes can involve sexual attraction…I think its fair to say if we love someone we want to be with that person. Love is long term, lust is short term. Ask any of us who have been married a long time - love requires a long term commitment- it wouldn’t survive on sexual desire, chemistry and lust alone.

The greatest way to show true love for a cherished one is to care for their health. It says I love you and want to be with you for a very long time. I want you, not your life insurance policy. Let’s refashion Valentine’s Day love.

Just as I told you I am not the Grinch trying to ruin Christmas with all my silly healthful notions, I am neither da kink in Cupid’s arrow. I believe chick flicks rule and happily ever after should always be the story ending. We all know that being a good spouse or a good parent is NOT a popularity contest. Love can be camouflaged amongst caring, nurturing and making wise decisions.

Here is the uncreative, unhealthy, stereotyped, mundane Valentine’s routine:

Valentine’s Day roses (12)……..$30

Valentine’s Day chocolate………$20 (Laden with LDL, empty calories GI 120)

Dinner ……………………….$100 (usually earns a trip to the cardiologist)

Valentine’s Day gift……..$infinity

Total:  $  To infinity and beyond.

So how ‘bout this year for dinner…we make a healthy choice. We make a nice romantic dinner:

fresh salmon (Lots of great fresh fish markets in Toronto)

steamed vegetables

Brown rice

A bottle of red wine

You feed each other dark chocolate dipped strawberries

  • Yadi Yadi Yada…… (with dark chocolate roses)

The effort you displayed by putting this healthy, romantic evening together………..PRICELESS!

Sounds like a great, healthy, economical plan.

Here is the best part of my idea. My suggestion for a Valentine’s day card:

“To my One and only love….Showing our love for each other shouldn’t be just one day a year. My gift to us this year is a his and hers gym membership. I want us to grow to a healthy, old age together, so I commit to you that 3 days per week we will go and work out together. There we can encourage each other, get sweaty together, come home together all pumped up and…yadi yadi yada together. Our health and happiness together should be celebrated all year”.

OK….I write fitness articles….not for Hallmark Cards….but you get the idea.

BTW, February is heart health month. With thanks to the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation let’s review the major risk factors for heart disease:

Smoking, High blood pressure, High blood cholesterol, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol consumption, diabetes, overweight, stress & triglycerides. Note all of these risk factors are drastically reduced by good nutrition and exercise.

Check out their very informative website, but please participate in their advocacy letter to the government asking to regulate the use of trans fats in foods. “Trans fat is the new tobacco.”

Remember how much we love Fido on Valentine’s Day. Hopefully the cold Canadian winter will even warm up so we can all take Fido for an extra long romantic walk.

Remember the DeFranco family from the 70’s…(btw from Port Colborne, Ontario)…..”A heart beat…it’s a love beat”

So keep the thump thump thump in Valentine’s Day & in your heart!

My wish for you, as always….

May you get at least 60 minutes of exercise today!

The massage is performed on a floor mat and each massage is a unique integration of stretching, twisting, pressing and palming over the entire body.

Fitness is Not a Passing Fad

There were 6 lifestyle habits shared by the always thin and successful losers: portion control, low fat intake, eat fruits and vegetables every day, eat whole grains not refined, cardio exercise at least four times per week, and strength train at least once per week. Good healthy, long term lifestyle habits win.

Probiotics - A Tummy Rub from the Inside
January 13, 2010 – 11:44 am | 7 Comments

Probiotics are living microbial organisms within our digestive tract, and for women in the vagina. Often referred to as the good bacteria, or friendly bacteria, some of their superhero powers are thought to be fighting harmful bacteria, immune system support and production of vitamin k. Dysbiosis (dysbacteriosis) is an imbalance of intestinal flora (bacteria), usually from overgrowth of yeast, harmful bacteria and parasites. This scenario leads to a toxic buildup which can lead to organ stress. So keeping our digestive system humming is a god proactive health step we can all do. We don’t have to know an exact bacterial count, we just make sure we follow certain very easy steps to help encourage the good guys win.

Glycemic Index

When our blood sugar level rises, as in after eating, the pancreas secretes insulin to deal with the sugar. If our blood sugar levels drop too low, than our pancreas secretes glucagon, which tells our body we need more glucose. So the pancreas is kind of like a seesaw, always trying to maintain glucose homeostasis. Insulin gone wild can encourage the onset of type II diabetes, causes us to store body fat, LDL to form arterial plaque, raises triglycerides and lowers HDL (the good cholesterol), kidneys to retain salt and raise blood pressure, overstimulate our appetite and cause blood clots that can lead to stroke and heart attacks. i.e. - its serious.

Hunger Pangs
January 11, 2010 – 9:06 am | No Comment

Controlling our blood sugar level is a critical yet often ignored aspect of looking after ourselves. Healthy blood sugar levels are key to proactive healthcare, something that we can easily take charge of. Regulating our blood sugar is the best way to maintain our fat burning capacity. The best way to control blood sugar levels are the same ways to prevent hunger pangs, maintain our fat burning abilities, maintain energy levels and metabolic efficiency. Energy homeostasis (a scientific way of saying hunger/food balance) is a balance between energy intake and energy expenditure = the food we eat vs. our physical activity level. This energy homeostasis is what manipulates our body composition = body fat levels.

2010 will be different. This is the year that we will keep our fitness resolutions. This is where the rubber meets the road, let’s do it for real this time. This is the year we will truly love ourselves and invest in our health.

Take Ownership of Your Healthcare
December 31, 2009 – 6:50 pm | One Comment

We can all agree that our Canadian healthcare system is seriously over burdened. Yes, it has numerous challenges, however, I still think we are truly blessed to have our Medicare system. Having a publicly funded universal health insurance system means we have to do our part to help ourselves. We can clearly see just by the number of people in the waiting room of our doctor’s office, how long we often have to wait to get an appointment, our doctors are busy, and can’t always invest as much time with each of us as we would like. Therefore, we have to be our own advocate and be proactive.

From Resolution to Ritual

2010 will be different. This is the year that all our New Year’s resolutions will evolve into reality. Perhaps the #1 new year’s resolution of all times is to get in shape. So how do we assure this isn’t just another flippant promise to ourselves….here is how.

The Weather Outside is Frightful…And so is the Number on that Scale!

There are a number of reasons why weight maintenance and never mind weight loss are so much more difficult in cold weather. Metabolism, lifestyle, nutrition and exercise all conspire together to provide this challenge.

Hara Hachi Bu - The Okinawan Mantra
December 12, 2009 – 7:13 pm | No Comment

The Okinawans have a tradition called “Hara Hachi Bu”. Eat until only 80% full then stop. Rambam, otherwise known as Maimonides, is thought to be the greatest Jewish scholar of all times. Rambam interpreted the Torah’s view on overeating as gluttony. What we have scientifically proven as the sensible habits of long term, lifestyle fitness…were known hundreds and hundreds of years ago.
